Mary Lou (Haan) Butterfield
Mary Lou (Haan) Butterfield, age 73, of Topeka passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb.13, 2010, ending her courageous battle with leukemia. She was born July 13, 1936 at Hartford, SD, daughter of Eisse and Millie (Matthias) Haan. Mary received her teaching certificate from General Beadle State Teachers College in 1958 and first taught school in Tyler, MN. She received a BS in Elementary Education and Psychology from Sioux Falls College in 1972 and taught several grade levels for twenty-six years at Carbondale Grade School, KS. She also worked transcribing medical records at StormontVail, St. Francis, and Memorial Hospital for many years. Mary loved playing her piano, golf, oil painting, history and travel, and was able to visit her fathers' homeland of Pilsum, Germany in 2008. She enjoyed socializing with her Birthday Group Friends, Line Dance Ladies and participated in the Red Hat Society. Mary loved animals, especially her beloved Tinker, and is remembered for her good humor. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eisse and Millie Haan, three brothers, Harlan, Lawrence, and Kenny, and six sisters, Vera Beckfield, Blanche Peterson, Marcene Haan, Shirley Flock, Lila Rolfson, and Elaine Lofswold. Survivors include a sister, Beverly Haan, Topeka, a son, Richard Hansen, Topeka, a daughter, Amy Bermudez, Berryton, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Sat., Feb. 20 at St. Davids Episcopal Church, 3916 S.W. 17th, Topeka. Internment of cremains will be at Hartford Cemetery, SD, at a later date.
