Baby Dies After Swallowing Fuel Oil

One of the saddest tragedies that has occurred in the vicinity for a long time happened Monday evening when little Kenneth Eugene Fiegen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Fiegen, died from the effects of poisoning induced by swallowing fuel oil.

Mr. and Mrs. Fiegen were at Marcus Iowa, when the incident occurred, attending the wedding of a cousin. The Fiegen children had been left at the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Stageberg, at Baltic. Mrs. Stageberg had slipped out of the house for a brief time and when she returned found the little Kenneth had located a jug with fuel oil, in an out-of-the-way place, and had drank some of the contents. The little fellow was taken to the hospital and given treatment and apparently was recovering in a satisfactory manner. He had been taken back to his grandparents' home, but with a few minutes it could be seen that his condition was worse, and he was being returned to the hospital when he passed away at 8 o'clock.

Kenneth Eugene was born May 31, 1944 and would have been two years old tomorrow. He is survived by three sister, Carol, Ellen Marie, and Mary Ann, two brothers, Lloyd and Jerome. One sister died in infancy June 1 of last year. He is also survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Stageberg and Mr. and Mrs. Max Fiegen of Dell Rapids.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at 9:30, by Rev Medicus at St. Mary's Church. Burial was in the local cemetery.
