History ****HIAWATHA ASYLUM

Hiawatha Asylum for Indians Cemetery
Lincoln County,
South Dakota

The Hiawatha Insane Asylum for Indians was established in 1903 in Canton South Dakota and closed in 1934. Over 350 "patients" stayed there, and at least 121 died while in the asylum. Those 121 are buried in this cemetery which is located at the 5th hole of the Canton Golf Course. It is fenced in and golfers are not supposed to play balls that land there (see photo of Do Not Play sign). There are no individual stones, just this large marker with all the names listed. There are sites on the web that list all the names so I won't list them here, Google the asylum name to view.
